YOU TUBE AND HARRISON HOT SPRINGS ARTIST RESIDENCY

Google contacted me saying I should upgrade my you tube channel.  Funny thing is I had forgotten I had one.  Anyway it inspired me to open it up and add those videos that we had taken on our travels and some music we had seen.  Check it out...there are some fun ones.

I went to visit my friend Siobhan Humston  http://www.humstonstudios.com  who is on a residency at the ranger station in Harrison Hot Springs, BC for one year.  The building has an art gallery downstairs which she helps with and is right on the lake.  She had also been on a residency in New York for a month earlier in 2012.  I went with two other artists:  Mary Anne Tasheshi  www.matart.ca and Rachael Ashe http://rachaelashe.com.  

Once we finished our great lunch we explored the studio spaces.  I love the way Siobhan uses her space.  I had been in another space she had and I had the same feeling.  Following are a few pics of her studio and work.  She will be having a show at the Ranger Station Gallery in June 2013 and Rachael will be there in July.

Siobhan has this ongoing project where she collected everything she could not recycle from Jan 1-Dec 31, 2012.  She will make a sculpture at some point out of it.  Her thinking is that the substrate cannot be made from something that is not recyclable.  A work in progress.

CROSSES

You might remember when Arnt and I collaborated on a cross for Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver.  They wanted something made by an artist from the east side that refelected the neighbourhood.  This is the one we made from an old porch column, pattern pieces from Nyes Foundry, a wood joist from our house and we created the shroud from copper and then verdigrised it.  It is about 6 feet tall.

Well they approached us again to create a smaller one that was similar but not the same for their administration office. This is what we came up with using a yellow cedar column that Arnt turned on a lathe, Nyes Foundry pattern pieces, an old plane framed by a vintage wood folding measure tape, a door lock from a house on Georgia Street and a skeleton.  A little bling was added by using a glass red marble.  It is about 30" tall.

 

FUNERAL, FAMILY AND FAIN

We lost one of our elders in the family.  Art was 90 and had a great life with our Aunt Bev for 30 years.  He will be missed.  The funeral was in Kamloops and several of us made our way up there on the Coquihalla Route.  Fabulous vistas and tall peaks still covered in snow.  We attended a very nice service to say goodbye with great stories, music, tears and laughter.  Art was in the second world war so the legion did a Last Post ceremony which was wonderful.  

We all stayed at the hotel called The Plaza hotel.  I highly recommend it...Paul the manager is awesome.  www.theplazahotel.ca  It turned out our cousin Fain was playing at the hotel that night with a band called Doc and the Disorderlies.  We all had a great dinner and then the music started.  Two guitars, one banjo and Fain sang and played the washboard.  Soon some of the family, two nephews, husband, brother-in-law and father-in-law were up there playing along.  Was a great night seeing them all play together.

After a family breakfast Arnt and I headed north towards Barriere.  We found a fabulous antique store there, with farm equipment, vehicles and a variety of other things.  Arnt bought a vintage chainsaw for his tool museum and I bought three silks, which were collector items found in cigarette packages to encourage customer loyalty.

We arrived in 108 Mile Ranch in the the Caribou where my Mom, sister and brother-in-law live for an Easter turkey dinner.  They cooked it on a spit over the barbeque.  Very delicious.  My brother-in-law's family came and his Mom brought most of the food.  The weather was fantastic so we sat outside for the afternoon.  The next day we went on a bike ride before heading south down the Fraser Canyon.   The views were outstanding and the water was rushing.

MUSIC

I don't normally post about music but I recently went to see my nephew Evan Arntzen play sax and clarinet with a band at

The band led by Daniel Gaucher also included Chris Gestrin on piano and Andre Lachance on bass.  It was an afternoon of everything Thelonius Monk.  Absolutely fantastic.  The audience is eclectic for sure with regulars, neighbours, visual artists and other musicians.

I really like what the pub is doing.  They serve pretty good food as well as Saturday afternoon jazz music from 3 to 7pm.  http://www.patspub.ca  to see who is playing under upcoming events.  I highly recommend you check it out and support what they are doing and our local musicians.

Evan and Arnt Arntzen (nephews) are having a CD release party on Thursday, April 4 at St. Michael's Hall (2474 Prince Edward St)  9-midnight.  Tickets available at rcpdance.eventbrite.ca.

FOUR WONDERFUL WOMEN AND THEIR ART

Went to CityScape Community Art Space last night to see the show Ruminations with artists Rosemary Burden, Angela Gooliaf, Judy D. Shane and Debbie Westergaard Tuepah.  

Their connections are: a background in science and/or mathematics as well as being artists who all went to Emily Carr University.   I felt the art worked well together and a lot of it has to do with the hanging of the show by the staff of the gallery.  Here are a few photos from the show.   

The show will be up until April 13, 2013 and there is an artist talk March 23, 1pm to 3pm.  (Rosemary will not be part of the talk as she is out of the country)  
The gallery has lots of information on the artists but I will try to explain their art practice as far as I understand it.

Judy's photo based paintings

Judy takes photos of each paint swipe and then through a digital process combines them in patterns.  There is a scientific explaination to the combonations but you will have to as her to explain that.  The photos are printed on lovely metallic paper.

Angela's whole show is based on ants.   There is a social connection in each piece.  They are all pencil drawings.

Debbie's sculpture

Debbie uses dripping paint sculptures and yarn and paint sculptures to reference math and the connection to human behaviour.  She paints with acrylics. 

These butterflies cover a branch

 Okay I absolutely love Rosemary's work because it is an installation and uses found objects.  Two things dear to my heart.  Apparently there are 74,000 paper butterflies in these two pieces.
